Five or six days, or the full week?
The lower daily rate starts before you reach seven days. In the same check, a five-day hire of the cheapest small car cost £55.87, or £11.17 a day, about the same daily rate as the week.
So if you only need five or six days, book exactly that. Five days cost less than a full week for 96% of the offers we compared. If you are unsure how long you need, price both before you book.
When weekly hire makes sense
- A UK holiday. A week in Cornwall, the Lakes or the Highlands, with one car from start to finish. Our best UK road trips guide has route ideas.
- Your car is in the garage. A service, MOT repair or bodywork job that runs for several days.
- Family or friends visiting. Pick them up at the airport and keep the car for their stay.
- A week working away. Site visits or meetings somewhere public transport does not reach.
- Trying a car type. A week with an automatic, SUV or estate before you buy one.

What to check before you book
The cheapest offer is not always the best value. Open the offer details and check these before you pay:
- Mileage. In our check, two in three weekly offers had unlimited mileage. The rest were capped, most often at 700 miles for the week, about 100 miles a day.
- Fuel policy. Most offers were same-to-same or full-to-full: you return the car with the fuel level you collected it with. Photograph the fuel gauge and mileage at pickup and return.
- The deposit. The supplier holds a deposit on a card in the main driver’s name until you return the car. The typical deposit in our check was £500.
- The excess. Every booking includes collision damage waiver and theft protection, with an excess, typically around £1,900 in our check. Excess protection can reduce or remove it.
- Return time. Most suppliers charge in 24-hour periods, so bringing the car back later than your pickup time can add an extra day.

Manual or automatic?
Manuals are usually cheapest. In our check the cheapest manual for the week was £79.24 and the cheapest automatic was £98.07, still only £14.01 a day. If you would rather not drive a manual, use the transmission filter in the results to show automatics only.
