One booking, up to 30 days

Month-long car hire is a standard rental that runs for four weeks or a full month. You book it in one go, pick the car up once and return it once. One price covers the whole period, whether you need 28 days, 30 days or anything in between.

It suits anyone who needs a car for a few weeks without signing up to anything longer:

    • Your own car is off the road. A long repair, an insurance claim or a wait for parts can easily run to a month.
    • A new car is on order. Cover the gap between selling your old car and the new one arriving.
    • A work placement or contract. A month on site somewhere public transport does not reach.
    • Family visiting from abroad. A car for the whole stay, picked up at the airport when they land.
    • A long UK holiday. Four weeks touring Scotland, Cornwall or the Lakes, with one car from start to finish.

If you are searching for monthly car hire because you need a car for about a month, one booking here covers it. We don’t offer rolling monthly plans, long-term rental or leasing.

How much does it cost to hire a car for a month?

This is what a 30-day hire from Heathrow cost when we searched on 15 October 2026, for pickup on 1 December and return on 31 December. The prices are the cheapest in each car class across 394 offers.

Car class 30 days from Per day
    Small £528.60 £17.62
    SUV £566.27 £18.88
    Estate £579.88 £19.33
    Medium £665.16 £22.17
    People carrier £671.24 £22.37
    Large £949.92 £31.66
    Premium £2,105.92 £70.20

Prices change daily with demand, so search your own dates. Four things move the price most:

    • Season. School holidays and Christmas cost more than quieter months.
    • Pickup location. Airports add a location fee, so a city branch can work out cheaper.
    • Car class. In our check, the cheapest SUV cost less than £40 more than the cheapest small car for the whole month.
    • How far ahead you book. Popular cars, especially people carriers, can sell out in busy months.

Many offers let you pay part now and the rest at pickup. For the small car above, that was £20.40 when booking and £508.20 at the desk.

One month in one booking, or week by week?

Weekly bookings can look cheaper per day. In our check, the cheapest week from Heathrow (1 to 8 December) worked out at £11.32 a day, against £17.62 a day for the cheapest full month. The month included Christmas, when prices rise, so it is not a like-for-like comparison.

A single month-long booking still has practical advantages:

    • The price is fixed for the whole month. Book week by week and each new week is priced when you book it, which can cost more in busy periods.
    • One pickup and one return. Back-to-back bookings usually mean going back to the desk for a new contract and inspection each week, and you may get a different car.
    • One deposit. The supplier holds one deposit for the whole hire, instead of a new hold for each booking.

Search both for your dates and compare the totals. If you only need a car for a week or two, see our weekly car hire and short term car rental pages.

What to check before you book a month

A month is long enough for the small print to matter. Open the offer details and check these before you pay:

    • Mileage allowance. In our December check, just under half of the 394 offers had unlimited mileage. The rest were capped, most often at 2,240 to 3,000 miles for the month, about 75 to 100 miles a day. If you will drive a lot, look for unlimited mileage or work out your likely total first.
    • The deposit. The supplier holds a deposit on a card in the main driver’s name for the whole hire. In our check the typical deposit was £1,500, though some cars needed as little as £200. Make sure your limit covers it alongside a month of normal spending.
    • Excess cover. Every booking includes collision damage waiver and theft protection, with an excess, typically around £2,000 in our check. A month gives more time for a scrape, so excess protection is worth pricing up.
    • Fuel policy. Full-to-full is the fairest: you collect the car full and return it full.
    • Extra drivers. Anyone else who will drive must be added to the booking.
    • Early returns. Many suppliers don’t refund unused days, so book the length you need.

Our car rental guide explains deposits, excess and fuel policies in more detail. Our guide to car hire scams covers the charges to watch for when you return the car.

Choosing a car for a month

You will live with the car for weeks, so choose for comfort as well as price.

    • Small. Cheapest to hire and run, and easy to park in towns. Fine for one or two people with light luggage.
    • Medium or estate. More room for a family or a month’s worth of bags. Estates give the biggest boot for the money.
    • SUV. Higher seating and more space. In our December check it cost little more than a small car.
    • People carrier. Seven seats for larger families or groups.

In our check, the cheapest small car, SUV and estate for the month were all automatics. If you would rather not drive a manual for a month, use the transmission filter in the results to show automatics only.

    FAQ

Car hire for a month: FAQ

How long can I hire a car for?

Up to 30 days in a single booking. Enter your pickup and return dates in the search above to see month-long rates.

Can I hire a car for longer than a month?

Not through Cars 4 Rental. We compare rentals of up to 30 days and don’t offer long-term rental, rolling monthly plans or leasing.

Is hiring for a month cheaper than hiring weekly?

Not always. In our December check from Heathrow, the cheapest week cost £11.32 a day and the cheapest month £17.62 a day, though the month included Christmas. A single booking fixes the price and needs only one pickup and one deposit. Compare both in the search for your dates.

Is mileage unlimited on a month-long hire?

It depends on the offer. In our December check, 46% of month-long offers had unlimited mileage. The rest had a cap, often 2,240 to 3,000 miles for the month, with a charge for each extra mile. The allowance is shown in the offer details before you book.

What do I need to pick up the car?

Your driving licence, a credit or debit card in the main driver’s name (most suppliers need a credit card for the deposit), and a passport if you are renting outside your home country.

    Is insurance included?

Yes. Every booking includes collision damage waiver, theft protection and third-party liability. There is usually an excess, which you can reduce or remove by adding excess protection.

    Can I cancel my booking?

Yes. Cancel up to 48 hours before your pickup time for a full refund. After that, the supplier’s terms apply.

Can I return the car early?

You can, but many suppliers don’t refund unused days. Check the supplier’s terms in the offer details before you book.
