London car hire has a reputation for being expensive. It is not cheap, but the gap between a good price and a bad one is mostly information: where you pick up, when you book, and which charges you decline at the desk. This is what actually moves the price.
Where to pick up in London
Location is the single biggest price factor. The same car, same dates, same company can differ by a third between pickup points.

What London adds to the bill
Two charges catch visitors out, and neither is included in the rental price.
The Congestion Charge covers central London inside the inner ring road, 7am to 6pm weekdays and 12pm to 6pm weekends and bank holidays. If your pickup is central and your route stays central, you pay it.
ULEZ covers all Greater London, every day. Nearly all modern rental cars meet the emissions standard, so most renters pay nothing. Confirm with the supplier when booking and this line item stays at zero.
Six ways the price drops
– Book early, especially for summer and bank holidays. Prices rise as fleets fill.
– Compare pickup points, not just companies. Ten minutes on the map saves more than any promo code.
– Take full-to-full fuel. Prepaid tank deals refund nothing.
– Decline the desk extras you do not need. Excess insurance sold at the desk is the single biggest markup in the industry.
– Check the excess before you travel. A high excess with separate cover is usually cheaper than a low excess bought at the desk.
– Join nothing. Paid membership schemes rarely beat a good comparison price for one-off rentals.
The honest question: do you need a car in London at all?
Usually not for central London itself. The Tube is faster than driving for anything inside the circle of the congestion zone. A hire car makes sense when London is your start point, not your destination: leaving the city for the coast, Oxford, the Cotswolds or a multi-stop trip. If that is your plan, a one-way rental out of a rail hub branch often beats dragging a car through zone one.
