FAQ

Before you book

How old do I need to be to hire a car?

All hirers must be over 21 years of age. Hirers between 21–25 will incur a young driver surcharge of between £15–£25 plus VAT per day depending on the rental supplier. Most hire companies accept ages 21–70; if you’re under 25 or over 70 you might pay an additional fee — always double check the terms and conditions.

What documents do I need to hire?

1. Both parts of your valid driving licence — photo card and paper counterpart. You need to have held your full licence for over 1 year. If the paper counterpart is not available, a DVLA check will be carried out (a small charge of approximately £10 applies).

2. Two extra forms of ID, e.g. a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last 3 months.

3. All overseas hirers must produce a valid passport.

4. A debit or credit card for payment — sorry, we do not accept cash.

Can I book or hire a car for someone else?

Not a problem — the important thing is that they meet all the rental requirements. You will be expected to fill in information about that person when booking the car.

How do I change or cancel my booking?

You can cancel your booking or amend details without losing your booking fee typically up to 72 hours before the pick-up date and time. To do so, use the contact details on our Contact page — and always include your booking reference number and the email address used for your reservation.

FAQ

What's included

What's included in the rental price?

Limited mileage for all car groups — mileage is limited to 300 miles per day, with extra mileage charged at 10p per mile plus tax, payable locally. Insurance (collision damage waiver, theft protection, third-party liability), local taxes, airport surcharge, road fee and premium location fee are included.

What about extras — sat nav, baby seats, European cover?

Car hire deposits, sat nav, baby seats and European cover are all paid locally, and charges depend on the duration of hire. Our European cover starts from £58.33 plus VAT for 1–7 days — for longer periods, speak to one of our agents.

Can I add an additional driver?

Additional drivers who meet the rental terms and conditions are accepted. Charges vary from supplier to supplier — you will typically pay from £10.00 per day.

Which payment methods are accepted?

The following payment forms are accepted at the start of the rental to cover the deposit: Mastercard, Visa credit card, and American Express.

FAQ

At pickup & drop-off

What's the fuel policy?

The hire vehicle will be supplied with a full tank of fuel. It needs to be returned on a full tank, or refuelling charges will be applied. There are no refunds for unused fuel. Fuel policy can differ from supplier to supplier — check with the rental agent at pickup.

What should I check when collecting the car?

Check where to collect your car — some airport suppliers are off-site with a shuttle or meet-and-greet, so always check your rental voucher. Bring your documents: driving licence, passport (if travelling abroad or into the UK), a credit card, and the rental voucher. Make sure you have sufficient funds to cover the deposit. Check the rental agreement amount is as agreed before signing, and inspect the vehicle for any marks, scuffs or scratches — have the agent record them on the check-out sheet before you drive off.

What happens when I return the car?

Make sure the car is fully checked over by the hand-back agent and they confirm there is no additional damage — otherwise your card may be debited after the rental has completed. Some locations offer an out-of-hours drop-off facility; if you use it without an agent check, you risk being charged for damage that wasn’t there previously.

FAQ

Your excess, explained

What is an insurance excess?

When you hire a car you are normally liable to pay an amount towards the repair or replacement of the car if there is an accident or damage — this is the excess. It is often secured on a credit/debit card or requested as a deposit before leaving the rental location. It’s not unusual to see excess in the range of £500 to £1,500.

What is Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)?

Collision Damage Waiver is insurance usually included in the rental price of a hired car. It covers damage that occurs to your vehicle itself — however, there is almost always an excess: the first part of any repair amount that you pay yourself.

Can I protect myself against the excess?

Yes — our Damage Excess Refund product offers full reimbursement for the damage excess portion of any charges paid. We can offer excess protection with most of our suppliers to bring your excess down to zero; just ask at the time of booking. (Exceptions apply — full details in the terms and conditions on your rental voucher.)
