Hiring a car at Luton Airport
Luton is the closest London airport to the Midlands, sitting just off the M1 about 30 miles north west of central London. It is one of easyJet’s biggest bases, with Wizz Air and Ryanair also flying from its single terminal, and it is the natural pickup point for Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, plus an easy run up the M1 to the Midlands.
Like most UK airports, the rental desks are not inside the terminal itself. The main suppliers, including Enterprise, National and Alamo, Avis and Budget, Europcar and Hertz, operate from the car hire centre on President Way, a free shuttle bus ride from outside arrivals. The bus runs around the clock and takes five to ten minutes. SIXT runs its own branch a little further out near the Holiday Inn, with its own shuttle or a short walk. Check your confirmation email for your supplier’s exact pickup instructions before you fly.
One feature of Luton surprises renters: the airport sits on a hill above the town, and the roads around it can be steep and busy at rush hour. Factor that into your pickup and return timing if you are travelling at peak times.
Getting to Luton without a car
Trains from London St Pancras reach Luton Airport Parkway station in around 25 to 35 minutes. The airport is not at the station: the Luton DART, an automated shuttle, covers the final stretch in under four minutes and runs 24 hours a day. From the terminal, it is one more shuttle to the car hire centre, so a pickup straight off a flight involves two short rides. Leave a comfortable margin, and more at peak times.
By road, the airport sits just off the A505 with quick access to the M1 at junction 10. Central London is around an hour’s drive depending on traffic.
Where to point the car
Luton’s position makes it the best-situated London airport for the midlands and the Chilterns. St Albans, with its cathedral and Roman history, is a short drive away. Whipsnade Zoo sits on the Dunstable Downs in the Chiltern Hills, the highest point in Bedfordshire. Bletchley Park, home of the WWII codebreakers, is up the M1 towards Milton Keynes. And if your trip finishes in central London, our guides to driving in London, Heathrow and Gatwick cover the rest of the capital.

Luton car hire FAQ
Are the car hire desks inside the terminal?
No. Most suppliers sit at the car hire centre on President Way, reached by a free shuttle bus from outside arrivals that runs 24 hours a day and takes five to ten minutes. SIXT runs its own branch nearby with its own shuttle. Check your booking confirmation for your supplier’s exact pickup instructions.
How long does it take to get from the plane to the car?
Allow around an hour from landing to driving away: baggage, the shuttle from the terminal to the car hire centre, and the handover at the desk. The DART and shuttle add steps that other airports do not have, so leave a margin, and more at busy times.
Which London airport should I hire from, Luton or Stansted?
It depends which side of London you need. Luton puts you closest to the Midlands and the Chilterns with fast M1 access. Stansted suits Cambridge, Essex and the east, sitting just off the M11. Both are well outside London, so neither is a good choice if your entire trip is in central London: a city branch is easier.
What documents do I need to hire a car at Luton?
Your driving licence, a credit or debit card in the main driver’s name, and your passport or other photo ID. See our car rental guide for the full checklist, including deposits and fuel policies.
Can I pick up at Luton and drop off somewhere else?
Yes. Most suppliers support one-way rentals between their airport and city branches for a fee that reflects the distance. Tick “Return to a different location” in the search form above to compare one-way options and prices.
