Hiring a car at Stansted Airport

Stansted is London’s third busiest airport and the main base for Ryanair, with easyJet and Jet2 also flying from its single terminal. It sits in the Essex countryside just off the M11, which makes it the natural pickup point for Cambridge, Hertfordshire and the East of England, as well as a cheaper starting point for trips north out of London.

There is one thing every renter should know before landing: you do not collect your car at the terminal. The main rental desks and cars sit at the Car Rental Village on Coopers End Road, a free shuttle ride of about five minutes from the terminal forecourt. Shuttles run every few minutes. Allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes at each end of your rental for the transfer, and follow the signs from arrivals to the shuttle stop.

The big names all operate from the Village: Enterprise, National and Alamo, Avis and Budget, Europcar, and Hertz with its low-cost brand Firefly. A handful of cheaper operators run from off-airport sites nearby with their own shuttles. They can look tempting on price, but check recent customer reviews on damage charges and deposits before choosing one, and check your confirmation email for the exact pickup instructions.

Getting to Stansted without a car

The Stansted Express train runs from London Liverpool Street to the airport station in 48 minutes, with trains every 15 minutes during the day, and from Tottenham Hale in around 36 minutes. The station sits next to the terminal, a two minute walk from the doors. If you are picking up a car straight from a flight, the shuttle from the terminal forecourt is the only extra step.

Driving to the airport yourself is simple: Stansted sits just off the M11, around 30 miles north east of central London, with the M25 a short stretch south on the same road.

Where to point the car

Cambridge is the classic run from Stansted, a pleasant drive up the M11 to a city of colleges and punts. Closer to the airport, Audley End House makes an easy half day out. Head east on the A120 for the Essex coast at Clacton or Frinton, or south towards London when you are ready to hand the keys back. Our guides to Heathrow and Gatwick cover the other side of London if your trip needs it.

Stansted car hire FAQ

Are the car hire desks inside the terminal?

No. The main desks and cars are at the Car Rental Village on Coopers End Road, reached by a free shuttle from the terminal forecourt that takes about five minutes. Check your booking confirmation for your supplier’s exact pickup instructions.

How much time should I allow for picking up the car?

Allow 30 to 45 minutes from landing to driving away: baggage, the walk to the shuttle stop, the ride to the Village, and the handover at the desk. The same buffer applies on the way back, so plan your return to the airport accordingly.

Is Stansted inside the London Ultra Low Emission Zone?

No. The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) covers Greater London, and Stansted sits outside it in Essex, so driving from the airport costs nothing extra. The charge only applies if you drive into London itself. Nearly all modern rental cars are exempt from ULEZ anyway, but confirm with your supplier.

What documents do I need to hire a car at Stansted?

Your driving licence, a credit or debit card in the main driver’s name, and your passport or other photo ID. See our car rental guide for the full checklist, including deposits and fuel policies.

Can I pick up at Stansted and drop off somewhere else?

Yes. Most suppliers support one-way rentals between their airport and city branches for a fee that reflects the distance. Tick “Return to a different location” in the search form above to compare one-way options and prices.
